catching up on life

a few things.

1) Cervical Cancer Vaccine

i had my first dose of the 3-dose vaccine today, courtesy of my aunty (meelia's mom) who so kindly offered to come to my place to administer it. it's something i always wanted to do, after having gone for two talks on it and the finding out about its benefits. for the interested, the commercial name of the vaccine i took was Gardisil, one of the two approved cervical cancer vaccines available in the market. it vaccinates the individual against strains 6, 11, 16 and 18 of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). the other available vaccine, Cervarix, vaccinates the individual against strains 16 and 18.

strains 16 and 18 are the two strains responsible for 70% of cervical cancer, while strains 6 and 11 have been found to be responsible for 90% of genital warts. as such, Gardisil may be administed to both males and females, as males are susceptible to genital warts as well. it also acts as a preventive measure for the male's future wife from developing cervical cancer/genital warts.

the vaccine is recommended to be adminsted to females between ages 9-26, after which its effectiveness has been found to diminish. medical recommendations do not indicate the administration of the vaccine on males, and any agreement should be made between doctor and patient with full understanding of the drug.

2) Tuition

the arrangements have been quite good thus far, and i can get along with this girl i'm teaching rather well. my main objective is really quite straightforward: to earn money. now that i've gotten my camera (after months of eating $1.50 lor mee), my new goal is to save up enough money to travel (and possibly a lens or two?). it does feel good to be able to put some money into your account, especially on your own credit. but at the back of my head, i do hope to be a good influence to my tutee, and to be able to teach her more than just algebra and geometry.

3) Council Reunion

after a year of planning, our event takes flight next week. with more than 500 guests going to be present, the alumni including several distinguished guests, businessmen, ministers, i really hope for the best. :)

all other ground is sinking sand

i haven't blogged in more than a week! see, this is what school does to you. it eats your life away.

too many things have happened, and too fast. first day of school, MCF in the morning at 8am, Dean's welcome address, going to Simon's to print photos in between classes, Kyna and Meelia's hostel warming party, bag shopping and eating tangyuan with joy at the army market, clandestine operations in my house, 32nd Council reunion, Stef appearing in the papers with her dad, tuition class, mission trip training, kaya toasts and MOH Perm Sec talk.

lots of thinking these days, figuring out the difference between being a hardworking student and a mugger, rethinking about the convictions i want to have being in Med school. people always say Med students (need to) mug their lives away, refrain from CCAs and just hibernate in the libraries. too many people have told me that i've "bid my freedom goodbye" and that i won't have anymore life once i start school. it was discouraging, almost disheartening. i never liked, and couldn't possibly tolerate, school that comprised of pure academia. i don't consider myself to be an extremely consistent person, though definitely a hardworking one. perhaps the regular Hwa Chong mug-when-the-test-or-exams-approach kind of student.

to be honest, upon starting school, i was instantly sucked into the whirlpool of mugging. 1 week into our semester and we've made our first trip to the library, spending a good 3 hours there reading. the strangest thing is that our peers frowned upon such actions, but followed suit anyway.

a sudden realization was that we all have walked straight into the trap of putting on the stereotype that everyone deems us to be, whether or not we are as such. people who don't usually work so hard feel compelled to do so when their peers seem to be doing so and this leads to a massive chain reaction within this pool of strangers who fight to keep up. it's as though we've made the rumours, that may not have been real, come true. makes me consider how easily we change according to circumstances, and brings new meaning to the song lyrics, "On Christ the solid rock I stand; All other ground is sinking sand."

...
Meelia and Kyna's hostel warming party was a great meet up for us since school started. it's always wonderful company and good food. :) 32nd gathering at president scholar's house was also another highlight, chilling out, meeting up and protecting ear drums. xP

hello i am friends with the president scholar. hohoho :) <3

happy birthday :)

Premiering - OHM's Campaign Video!

THIS IS MY COUNCIL CAMPAIGN VIDEO.

haha i discovered it while sorting out my PC files. in retrospect, i think we really had a whole lot of guts to pull that silly thing off and present it in front of the whole faculty. also realized that three of us really needed a new sense of humour. -.- it was actually an extremely difficult clip to make! the StarWars scene took us AGES because the tracing paper was too NARROW (therefore you can see ze's hands camping at the side ready to pull it back) and uncooperative. the traffic light scene was HILARIOUS i think the truck driver wanted to ram stef down for doing that to him. hahahah. and Bumper the (stef's) dog was UNCOOPERATIVE half the time! we had to keep giving him treats. x) it was really tiring, but very fun. (:

in other news, i finally got new sneakers! whoopoodoop! i chose this pair after trying on a whole bunch of guniang-round-toe/poseurish-bright-coloured ones. super cannot make it. SIGH. but i like this one for its subtlety. (:
